hill country documents

The Hill Country Planning Association is a group of local citizens concerned with the rapid development of Northwest Bexar County with little regulation. Similar occurrences have prompted citizens in several surrounding counties to join our efforts. Our mission is preservation and protection of our heritage -- communities, land, water and the general environment, through education and participation in the governmental process. Our motto is : "We have not inherited the land from our fathers; we are borrowing it from our children".

Earth to EAA -- Small Solutions For Big Water Problems
07/20/2009
By Dave Collins

The title of the report is: "Recharge and Recirculation -- Edwards Aquifer Optimization Program." That mouth-full of bureaucratic lingo translates to what has the appearance of the combination of a Rube Goldberg contraption and a carny's shell game...

This article has been reprinted with permission from The Texas Observer.

Sixty feet below the shimmering surface of Jacob's Well, an artesian spring that for thousands of years has pulsed iridescent blue-green water from the Trinity Aquifer to the surface, a sophisticated instrument measures the spring's vital signs. The results are beamed almost instantaneously to the Internet.
These days the gauge detects only the thinnest of pulses...

The State of the Birds report is complete and available for download at www.stateofthebirds.org. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar released the first-ever comprehensive report on bird populations in the United States, showing that nearly a third of the nation's 800 bird species are endangered, threatened or in significant decline due to habitat loss, invasive species and other threats. At the same time, the report highlights examples, including many species of waterfowl, where habitat restoration and conservation have reversed previous declines, offering hope that it is not too late to take action to save declining populations. The report synthesizes data from three long-running bird censuses conducted by thousands of citizen scientists and professional biologists including those from state wildlife agencies ...
